Should I start local?

Hello investors,
I want to get started in land investing and I am trying to decide what county I am going to start in. The county I live in is close to a large city and is experiencing growth. I would like to start in this county because I am familiar with the area and could visit the properties that I am considering purchasing. Does this sound like a good idea or should I search for properties in “hotter” counties that may be farther away.
